The perfect Outline Shader. Atleast close. It took me a few hours to come up with a proper outline shader, and I will like to give the credit to Devin for his shader made me want to create a proper alternative to the problem.

May 27, 2016 · Another, very expensive approach would be to run a fragment shader the same way as the 2D outline example does: render all objects needing an outline in a buffer (RenderTexture), run the 2D outline shader on it, then draw this over the scene. This would get the best results, but it's a lot slower.

Can I make it outline only with transparency inside? It seems that Godot has drawing capability so could I just draw the lines? If so, then is this performant? Or should I use a sprite instead? If so, I heard Inkscape (or something like that) is good? Any other suggestions? Many thanks in advance!
To add it to a sprite, go to Material -> New ShaderMaterial, then click on it to expand it, drag and drop the shader file on Shader. Then you can edit it's params: Smooth - if true, the outline is smooth. Width - how wide the outline should be. Outline color - the color of the outline. Pixel size - the size of pixels that the outline is made of.

Sprite outlining is a very common effect used in 2D games. Many engines come with this feature built in, but Godot did not seem to have that, so I decided to create a shader to handle it.
